Homegirl

May 11, 2020 by Frendy Lemorin in Music

All of the greatest songs on earth are inspired by real life situations. Whether they’re filled with joy or sorrow, these captivating tunes are like arrows that strike you right in the heart, inducing a bloody outpour of emotions. When you have a crooner kicking one off with: “that ain’t my bitch, that’s my motherfuckin’ homegirl,” it’s sure to be fire!

With that said, rising Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Leven Kali has a banger on his hands with “Homegirl.” Despite its bluntness, the Smino and Topaz Jones-assisted track is a colorful groove, which stimulates couples to resolve any quarrels in their *clears throat* situationships. “…We’ve all gotten the ‘Oooh who’s that?’ accusation of someone who’s just a friend and nothing more. This song is an answer to that,” says Leven to Fader magazine.

“Homegirl” appears on Kali’s latest outstanding studio project, High Tide. Peep the single’s visual below:

Splash Brothers: Patiently

April 08, 2019 by Frendy Lemorin in Music

What happens when five fast-rising lyricists come together for the greater good of Hip Hop? You get the highly eclectic rap supergroup, Splash Brothers.

The original Splash Bros, consisting of NBA superstars Steph Curry and Klay Thompson (yes, Klay is a superstar in my book—he’s dating the enchanting Laura Harrier), would be proud to hear the collective’s debut single, simply because they’re shooting 100% from the field coming out the gate!

Titled “Patiently,” the genre-bending tune is like a delicious bowl of gumbo, as it showcases the flavorful yet distinctive flows of group members Topaz Jones, Allan Kingdom, Brother KAMAU, Haile Supreme and SIIMBA SELASSIIE.

Indulge in the banger below:

There's Nectar & Pleasure In Passion

March 02, 2018 by Frendy Lemorin in Music

Rising lyricist Topaz Jones has just unleashed two new tracks in part II of his A side/B side series.  Titled "Nectar," and "Pleasure in Passion," the Montclair, NJ-raised spitter states that both of the songs explore the theme of desire.  "We all want the things we can't have. It can be a motivating factor or take power over you," he further explains.

Check out why i-D magazine dubbed Topaz as New York's Prince of Funk by listening to the jams below:
